Specialises in the protection and exploitation of intellectual property rights particularly in the technology, media, leisure and IT sectors. Handles general commercial and contracts work including sales and marketing, sponsorship, merchandising, franchising and image rights. Also advises on e-commerce, data protection, communications and information technology; project structuring, management and delivery, including shareholders agreements, joint ventures, partnering, collaborations, R&D contracts, outsourcing and service agreements, and terms of business.
Jonathan is a member of the firm's North America Group and leads the firm’s partnering with the London Innovation Centre.
Experience
- Advised British Telecom on its six year $170 million network management services agreement with Redstone Telecom, and on £40 million contact centre outsourcing arrangements across Europe with ClientLogic
- Advised Clipper Windpower on its strategic alliance with BP Alternative Energy for the exploitation of Clipper's wind turbine technology through a long-term turbine supply agreement and the joint development of five wind energy projects in the USA, with a deal value of around US$4 billion. This is the largest strategic alliance yet seen in the UK renewable energy market
- Advised Readers Digest on a range of major publishing deals including licensing and distribution agreements for high profile branded products including 'Noddy', 'Barbie', 'Pokemon', 'Jellabies', and 'Bear in the Big Blue House'
- Advised Scottish & Newcastle on the creation of a new independently-operated technical support services company established by Scottish & Newcastle and Carlsberg-Tetley in the UK, handling aspects such as the services contracts, service level agreement, and sub-contracts
- Advised Marine Current Turbines on its contracts with EDF Energy for the collaborative development, funding and licensing of MCT's patented tidal current technology and related IP rights and know-how, including the 1,000Kw 'SeaGen' tidal energy turbine in Northern Ireland's Strangford Lough. This transaction attracted considerable public attention. UK Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks commented: "The UK leads the world in the field of tidal energy and this announcement is a very important step in maintaining that position... Projects like SeaGen are exactly the type of scheme we have to replicate in order to develop a world class UK industry."
